This book consists of a very distinct 2 halves, with the first being a description of the events of the Celebrity Big Brother 2007 television series, shown on Channel 4. Whilst the reader is left free to form their own opinions, the author sums up the main events as being “a conflict over class … with race as the weapon rather than the motive behind it all” (pg 264). The second half is then a comparatively short biography of the Bollywood actress, with further details of her career, family and personal life. This creates both an intriguing insight into Shilpa’s European appeal at that time, as well as a readily accessible first introduction to the nature of the Bollywood film industry. The details behind some of Shilpa’s decisions also cast an interesting light on some of the difficulties still being faced by India as a developing nation, with one of the world’s fastest growing economies, trying to preserve its heritage and values in a modernised world. This is therefore a hugely entertaining, educational and informative read, which can be enjoyed as a TV report, a film biography (Chapter 8 onwards), a beginners guide to Bollywood and its celebrity culture, or as something more than the sum of its parts.Read full review
