Relationships don't always fit like a glove. Steve Martin stars in this adaptation of his very own novel, Shopgirl, the story of a complex love triangle between a bored sales girl, a wealthy businessman and an aimless young man. Mirabelle (Danes), a disenchanted sales girl and aspiring artist sells gloves at Saks, 5th Avenue. She has two men in her life: wealthy divorcee Ray Porter (Martin); and struggling musician Jeremy (Schwartzman). Mirabelle falls in love with the glamorous Ray, and her life takes a magical turn, but eventually she realizes that she must empower herself and make a choice between them.
Mirabelle works at a fancy store Selling gloves - oh what a bore A struggling artist, always broke Her social life's become a joke She meets a guy at a Laundromat They meet and greet, and then they chat On their first date she pays her way His telephone number gets chucked away But then the loneliness sets in She lets him take her for a spin Out of the blue comes this guy Ray A winning smile, and with cash to play Completely swept right off her feet She's never had it quite so sweet Wining, dining, fancy clothes And paying off the debt she owes But then she takes stock of her life Some day she'd like to be a wife You know she'll choose one or the other But neither one is worth the bother The acting's great, the plot less so Just people going with the flow For rainy days it's worth the rental Especially for the sentimentalRead full review
its a romance film with a deep and thoughtful plot. the romance between a shop assistant and a much older man could look sleazy etc but the whole thing was tasteful and no at all sleazy. i also found jason schwartzman adorable in this film. a very good ending which ties up the whole story and good narration throughout.
I found this film a bit of a disappointment. I found it to be very slow to get into. I do not think it is one of Steve Martins' best films. I personally found it not a good film however, it has had some good reviews and a number of people I know did enjoy it. I would recommend watching it - to make your own mind up.
