This lens is a Tank! Well made, fast and great value! Decided to purchase this lens for sports and wildlife photography with Teleconverter and a bit of Portraits to give that extreme blown out background with Bokeh.. This lens does all that esp combined with my Sony A7iii and a Sigma mc-11 adapter.. This combo performs flawlessly as you were using native lenses and the image quality perfect for prob 90% of the worlds population. The stabilization was net used in lens since my Sony body already posses IBIS but has done well on my friends Canon 7d ii body. All in all I’m very Happy dollar for dollar and am so glad that Sigma built this 120-300 focal range. Though very heavy for the average built photographer, the 2.8 images are light years ahead in image quality and light harnessing performance compared to its less expensive 4.0+ predecessors . If you find a great deal on this lens with or without OS, I suggest you take advantage even with the newer tech, and lighter gear that infiltrated the market.Read full review

Prior to buying this my main telephoto lens for my 5d mkIII was the 70-200mm L IS USM, I had a 2x extender to give it some extra reach but that did mean a loss of light, image quality and slower auto focus speeds which is not ideal for shooting sports and wildlife (which I do quite a bit of) I had considered the Canon 300mm f4 or 400mm f5.6 as both are around £1k, however the temptation of this 120-300 f2.8 was too much Having read lots of reviews on the lens I was under the impression that this EX version was optically identical to the newer 'sports' version of the lens (I have since found its not the case and the newer lens does give better image quality) This lens still gives excellent image quality when you consider its a zoom lens, it allows you up to 300mm f2.8 and all this is only £1800 at time of purchase Its not quite got the sharpness of my Canon 70-200 but then again this has got 50% more reach without the need for an extender It does weigh quite a bit too so if your doing a full days shooting I would at least pack a monopod incase just in case, up side is though carrying this thing around means you can cancel your gym membership Only big drawback with any of the 120-300 series is the 105mm filter on the front. Now personally I only need to use a UV filter on it and thats just to protect the huge front element, but a good quality filter will set you back £100+ Overall though I am very happy with the lens, yes you do get better IQ from the newer version but its also £1000 more expensive, which unless your going proper professional with it its probably not worth itRead full review
Saving for the EF 300 f2.8L IS II as a walk about lens with a 7d but borrowed a non USB version of this lens from a friend to try. I compared it to an EF 400 2.8L and of course the image does not have the pop of the canon but it is good to very good. Its weight, good enough IQ, nice zoom capability and low price (paid £1200)won me over. With a canon 1.4x III TC I found the AF in low light unacceptable on the 7d but Ok on a 1Dsmk3. As the light improves it comes into its own on the 7d and is magic for BIF. Without the TC the AF is fine in low light on the 7d. I have now bought one as an interim pending the 300 2.8 IS II.
