This is my first sewing machine. I didn't even know how to sew before purchasing this machine. I can honestly say that it is AWESOME! The manual, and dvd's included are very easy to follow. I have already made some clothes for my kids, and this machine made it a snap! The machine is very simple to thread, and the best feature is the assisted threading of the needle. The bobbin winding set-up is fool proof. There are more stiches than I will ever need. The machine comes with everything you need and alot of extra presser feet. The only thing I have noticed is that your everyday stores, like Walmart, do not carry the special bobbins needed for the machine. It does come with several to get you started, and the bobbins are very inexpensive to order from Singer though. I would definately recommend this machine to anyone! It is backed by Singer with a lifetime warranty too! A++++++++ I have had zero issues with my machine, and using it regularly for several months now.Read full review
I purchased this machine a few yrs. ago as it was advertised that it came with a serger attachment. I needed a serger as I was starting a clothing alteration business and didn't have room for serger thread. I found out later I could have purchased the attachment for $50. The serger attachment was never what I wanted. I didn't really need a new machine. The machine runs very smoothly and nicely and gives nice stitches and tension. I like the ease of the back stitching control. What I dislike about the machine is the extra wide presser feet. I prefer the old type that are 1/2" wide. I think it is difficult to do finger work when I need to get close to the foot to manipulate fabric. When it comes to topstitching the wide foot makes it harder to make a 1/4" because older feet were 1/4" from fabric edge. I guess it is what you get use to. I never did figure out how to attach and use the seam guide. I disliked the plastic zipper foot. There is no way one would ever install a zipper using a plastic foot but I did purchae a metal one that I could use. The throat plate is very thin and could break easily if one is not careful. I have to tape the throat plate down because it will not stay closed and when I backtack the throat plate backs up. I can not find the bobbins the machine uses easily at a Walmart store. I think the opening is too narrow to allow my hands to get inside to comfortably move and adjust the fabrics and bulky clothing is almost impossible to fit through the opening. The opening is rounded and had it been square it would allow for extra room. When sewing the presser feet can pop off if the fabric catches on the presser release lever. I like sewing without the table so I remove it. The machine has no support to hold the machine up with the table removed and tends to tip if too much weight is placed on the sewing end. I try to hem chiffon type fabrics and there is not enough pressure on the foot and feed dogs to sew very sheer thin fabric. The fabric is difficult to control and one ends up with crooked stitching no matter how you try. Works good on heavier fabrics and even sewed through leather when I was trying to put a zipper into a leather jacket. I have 6 other machines and non of them would allow me to feed the leather but this one went through it like a breeze so it is my standby for leather. I would rate this machine a good sewing machine for a beginner sewer but it is not heavy duty enough for my needs. I have been sewing for 50 years both personally and professionally using an industrial sewing machine. I also believe this would make an excellent machine for someone who is into making quilts. I would rate this machine about a 3 for value and a 5 for beginners or quilters. I paid $350 with serger attachment new and it is a good machine for the price. I am sure it was designed to be a throwaway at its life end as it has plastic insides works.Read full review

I had this machine exactly 7 months! It is cheaply made plastic gears parts. I was sewing a zipper and hit the zipper teeth with the needle. Then the bobbin didn’t work properly was wobbling back & forth. I brought it to be serviced. The bobbin works had cracked. He could replace it but it was plastic so it would happen again. I offered him my machine for parts he refused saying it isn’t worth it all plastic. I brought it home took it apart and I did find metal the screws. So now I will not purchase Singer manufactured after 1959! It did made me a much wiser and knowledgeable about my sewing machines.

This is a relatively easy machine to learn and use. I learned to sew when I was in the eighth grade Home Economics class. And nearly forty years later I decided to start up again making easy projects such as face masks. If you are a very experienced seamstress or tailor, this is likely not the machine for you. But for basic alterations, basic projects this is great for a beginner. It’s true that the bobbins are hard to find in Walmart or other sewing craft store but I have no difficulty finding the bobbins online...even on this website! The construction is mostly plastic as reviewed by others so I would say the prices I have seen for a used one are very reasonable.
