First saw this as a youngster not long after its release and was totally engaged with it. Starring Laurence Olivier & Michael Caine, these two stalwarts of British cinema totally carry the plot with engaging acting and bounce off of each other in a game of mental chess and intrigue. Cleverly written by Anthony Shaffer who also wrote The Wicker Man, the story is full of twists and turns with excellent dialogue. I recently bought the DVD; hence this review and wasn't disappointed. I hadn't been remembering the film through rose tinted glasses, it was still as sharp and funny as I remembered. Friends I've invited 'round to watch it who hadn't heard of it were also taken with the movie and put it up there with one of the great films of the 70's.

I was looking forward to watching this film for the first time since first watching it as a teenager in the 1970's. I was a bit disappointed. It will always be a good film but not as good as I thought it was. The direction and photography is not that good, despite having been made by a great Hollywood director, and it just seems a bit dated however the acting is brilliant and timeless.
