Amazing story of courage and fortitude in the face of adversity. It has taken me many years to get round to reading John McCarthy's story of his years in captivity as a hostage in Beirut. Nearly thirty years since his release, I have finally got round to reading this book, co-written with his partner of the time, Jill Morrell. It is no less compelling thirty years on, than when it was written. John and Jill's stories of how they survived and campaigned during his time as a hostage run in parallel and I simply could not put the book down once I'd started reading it. You can feel the emotions of anger, frustration and constant fear as you read but at the same time, the hope and resilience of the hostages and the dogged determination of the Friends of John McCarthy to ensure that the hostage crisis did not become forgotten with the passage of time. The book also deals with the aftermath of the prolonged period in captivity and the adjustment back into mainstream society which was very much more difficult for the hostages and their families than one might think. Not every book you read makes a lasting impact on how you view life. This one did.Read full review
