I brought these for use during train commuting, and they work pretty well, cutting out most of the constant high pitched noise but not so great on deep noises such as underground train rumble. Sound quality is pretty good, although not the greatest, and they are quite comfortable to wear, although my ears get hot after about an hour. Would recommend as a reasonably priced, pretty good noise reducing headphone, I am sure there are better performing ones, but much more expensive. I have not used on a plane yet, but reckon they should be OK for that too.
These Sony noise-cancelling headphones have convinced me so much that I bought a total of four for my family over a period of four years. All of them still work perfectly. There are of course much better ones out there, but not for the price (they can be found for less then 30 GBP as of December 2012, used or sometimes even new). In my experience the NC40 works best on long flights when there is a constant and even noise-level. I enjoy watching and listening to films with these without blasting my eardrums and can leave them on in noise-cancelling mode without any sound when I want to sleep. They are compact (fold nicely into a lightweight yet sturdy case) & comfortable and come with a long enough lead to connect to a standard 3.5mm stero-jack or to a double 3.5mm jack as found on aeroplane seats (the adapter is included). A single standard AAA battery lasts a minimum of 12 hours and I have had absolutely no issues with these. Hotly recommended. As an even more compact alternative I have one pair of in-ear Sony MDR-NC33 (the provided satchel fits into the palm of my hand) which have an even longer battery life and probably even better noise-cancelling. However I appreciate that in-ear fitting is not everyone's cup of tea and use both equally.Read full review
First experience of noise reducing headphones, but we were embarking on a return trip to Hong Kong (16 hours there / 20 hours back)and couldn't face the noise all that way. We were not disappointed by the Sony MDR-NC40s. Although on the photos they look like an old fashioned set of large headphones, they are really compact and very soft and comfortable to wear - and not embarrassing at all! They are lightweight, pack up beatifully into their own case and really work! They really made a big difference on the droning background noise on the plane and even dulled the noise of a grumbling child on the plane. There's a switch so that you can temporarily suspend the noise reduction if someone speaks to you and come with its own two-pin jack converter for the plane. They work as headphones even of the battery for the noise reduction has run down (some don't). I would really recommend these (paid under £40) as a real investment for comfort, use of the entertainment onboard a plane and also for sleeping on board.Read full review

I do not have much to say, but these headphones have a fantastic clear and deap rich bass sound, enabeling me to listen to the full septrum of my music. How it should sound. I recently tried the bose noise cancelling headphones in currys and these sony MDR-NC40 headphones have a very similar quality and noise cancelling affect if not better because they are over half the price of the bose headphones. Upon switching the noise cancelling unit on I Instantly noticed the background noise from "sister act the film" had been reduced to an acceptable level and I then pushed the monitor button and the volume had gone back up being sister act I quickly depressed it agian. Trying my headphones through my HP laptop with Itunes and only listening to compressed music formats (MP3 running at 190kbs) I was very impressed on how clear the high range and low range frequences punched through the 40mm Driver. overall 9/10 for sound quality being that these are "portable" and i presume that they have the travelling market in mind (being the reason for noise cancelling for areoplanes, bus, train and car journeys) the build quality was not as good as the bose head phones but still they are to an acceptable standard and being that these come with a travel pouch to put everything in such as Aeroplane adaptor spare battery (aaa - small penlite) for the noise cannceling unit you should not have any problems with breakage. 7/10 quality of design. I am very impressed and as these were brought for a present I am considering buying some for my self overall 8/10 rating and I give my recomendation.Read full review
