I know nothing about consoles so this review is for others like me not the gamers. I bought this for my son who is 7 years old after her grown up sister left home taking all the tech with her except and old Game Boy Colour and a N64 which I don't think still works. The house is so much tidier now! This was refurbished but in perfect condition, my son is playing mainly Lego and racing car games and is loving it - I cannot comment on the spec as I don't have a clue but for a 7-year old who dreams of racing car across Europe or being Capt Jack Sparrow it is great. Bought second controller as I think I would make a great Batman.

My original 60GB PS3 from 2007 finally died (i have to say i think it did extremely well) so being a PlayStation guy there was no question as to what to do; get another! Not being rich (a cheapskate) i went to eBay for some bargain hunting. After a look around i settled on an 'unwanted gift' which including postage only set me back about £200. Taking it out the box i was surprised at how much smaller it was (careful) and also lighter. Thinking about it this was kind of expected as the old one was a hefty unit (the Slim written on the box was a bit of a give away too...) As always with a PlayStation, plug it in, switch it on and in 2 minutes you're away. No hassle. It then struck me how quiet this thing is in comparison to it's big bro, it's like a ninja mouse after a short jog. However, when loading games (even during play) it is very clunky sounding, don't get me wrong it's not hover craft loud like an Xbox 360, but it is quite noisy. Over 5 times the storage capacity of my old one was very much welcomed, most of my old one was filled with random demo's that i had accumulated. The controller welcomes back the Dual Shock and i for one am glad about that, gives a nicer weight to the controller too. Then came a saddening moment: It doesn't play PS2 games... Which means no more Worms Armageddon, no more Timesplitters 2, no more Gran Turismo 4 (I don't rate GT5 highly) Vice City and San Andreas amongst a lot of great games. Don't get me wrong, current PS3 game are incredible BUT i am a fan of the old skool. Sitting in a room with 3 friends and being able to play without needing seperate consoles and interweb etc is far better in my opinion. I guess i'll just have to buy a cheap PS2 as well, it's just a bit more hassle than the one console. With Blu ray DVD, internet connection, BBC iplayer, 4OD, Love film and a whole host of other useful goodies it is hard to fault this console, but i have to be honest, it can't have been that hard to include PS2 and PS1 format capability? All in all, having played all the competition's consoles, for me the PlayStation 3 is easily the best; smaller, quieter, better layout, no need for an abundance of batteries and a rather handsome selection of games. again my only gripe is i can't play my old games on it, the shiny finish and touch sensitive buttons on the old one were nice too, but they don't really matter. It is a great console and it will do pretty much anything you want it to (within reason, so unfortunately no sandwiches) I would definitely recommend.Read full review
i bought the ps3 to use for gaming and as a blu-ray player.and it does the latter very well however an annoying downside to this particular model is that it WILL NOT play ps2 games.surely a backwards step this, as the earlier ps3 did.Strangely enough it will play ps1 games though.so dont bin that ps2 just yet.on the positive side gaming picture quality is superb and you can access the internet.
Big upgrade from the PS2 in terms of graphics and functionality. It has DVD and Blu-ray player built in as well as internet web browsing and capacity to download pre-paid apps including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The games are available really cheap now too in exchange shops, often for just a few quid, or available to download from the online store through the PS3. Enjoy!
