Home Made Sound Activated Flash or Camera Trigger box allows you to try Sound activated flash photography.

Just go to Flickr and do a search for "sound activated" and you will see examples of the type of photography possible using this box.

Connect one end to a microphone and the other end to a strobe flash or hot shoe flash. Any sound will then trigger your flash to fire. Both ends are fitted with 3.5mm jack plugs.

Powered by a 9V PP3 battery which is supplied and fitted.

Microphone and lead to connect to your flash are not supplied. If you contact me with a description of your flash unit, I can guide you on what you will need.

A bit more information about doing High Speed Photography

Freezing motion can give some pretty special photographic effects, for example capturing a ball as it hits water, a balloon bursting or a light bulb being shot with a pellet gun. Capturing such images introduces a lot of challenges. How do you handle timing with such short exposure times?

You have to handle shutter lag, synchronize the flash and time the exposure to just the right moment. The shutter lag of any normal camera is so long that it will be all most impossible to time the exposures.

To work around the problems with shutter lag and flash synchronization, the exposure is done in a
completely dark room. This way the shutter can be opened without actually getting an exposure.
The exposure time set on the camera just has to be long enough for the action to happen while the
shutter is still open. The exposure time set on the camera will not affect the exposure at all.
To actually get an exposure, a flash is fired. The flash light duration will now become the actual
exposure time.

Now we only need to synchronize the flash with the action we want to capture which is done using this trigger box. For example, Sound of balloon popping will trigger the flash, Sound of ball hitting water will trigger the flash, Sound of air gun firing will trigger the flash.

Typical Settings:

Flash set to appropriate power.

Camera on a tripod: Exposure time: 30 sec or a shutter release cable, ISO 100-200, Aperture F 11-16, manual focus.

Microphone: The distance between the object and microphone is altered depending on how sensitive you want it to be. You can always put a sheet over the microphone to decrease the sensitivity.

Now it’s up to your imagination!!!!
