We’ve recently watched all the movies in order and this was where we all hit the buffers. Remarkably lame, unfunny and laboured in it’s humour. Forced and unconvincing with Picard’s personal tragedy (and Stewart could do nothing with it). Malcolm MacDowell wasted. Shatner, too, on a thin, poorly written story that made no sense at all. And the HUGE budget for the earlier films wasn’t equalled here - difficult, one supposes, to go from those to the relatively constrained finances of the ‘Next Generation’ series without it looking odd. Special effects, especially the Enterprise crash landing quite outstandingly half-hearted. Looked like a toy space ship was hurled at a Hornby train set landscape. The Enterprise herself looked tinselly, plasticky and cheap. In the movies some of the models were awe-inspiring, but not here. ToysRus. The Next Generation are quite as dreadful as I remembered. Smug, anodyne and characterless. Emoting all over the screen, felt sorry for whoever had to clean up the mess. I’d stop at ‘The Undiscovered Country’ if I were you.Read full review
