About this product

Product Information

Barney is a solitary eight-year-old, given to wandering off by himself. One day he is lying on the edge of disused chalk-pit when he tumbles over, lands in a sort of cave, and meets 'somebody with a lot of shaggy hair and two bright black eyes' - wearing a rabbit-skin and speaking in grunts. He names him Stig. They learn to understand one another, and together they raid the rubbish dump at the bottom of the pit, improve Stig's cave dwelling, and enjoy a series of adventures that are sometimes wildly improbably and sometimes extremely practical.

A light hearted, easy going romp through a world any curious and active child would love to be a part of.

This book got my reluctant to read eight year old reading! The portrayal of Barney, a small boy who lives in his own little world of curiosity, exploration and love of the outdoors is so believable. Barney is a kind boy who meets a boy/man (maybe) about his own size from a totally different culture - Stone Age even. After discovering Stig, dressed only in rabbit furs, living in a makeshift home at the bottom of a disused chalk pit, now being used as a rubbish dump, Barney becomes a frequent visitor and playmate. He is fascinated by Stig's inventiveness and survival skills while Stig is equally amazed at the things that Barney brings him from the modern world. No-one at home believes Stig exists thinking he is just another one of Barney's imaginative friends. The two have many ...

  • A classroom classic.

I read this in school many years ago and in a fit of nostalgia I bought a copy. I read it in one sitting and remembered some of the passages in it as if I'd only read them yesterday. It's a good, wholesome book for pre-teens, written and set in less complicated times than today and is a good example of storytelling. This edition, while not having the original cover art, does include the charming illustrations and it was an absolute pleasure to read. Highly recommended.
