'Summoned by Bells' is a wonderful autobiography - warm, humorous, touching - John Betjeman's early life creates its own pictures. But Sir Hugh Casson's delightful and skilful illustrations (many are Ardizzioni-like) only enhance those - and what a joy that there are so many of them interspersed within the text! Wonderful book, shame it had been written in
