It is not a Smash-hit comedy as the cover advertises. It is a Charlie Kaufman film instead. Everytime I watch this film I discover new things and are left reflecting about my own life. Look up the meaning of Synecdoche and you’ll agree that this film attempts exactly this on life. The performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman is captivating and makes this film as special as it is. It is a rollercoaster journey into surrealism that may leave you wondering at first. Watch it twice and it will show you a different face the second time round.

There is a reason why budget $20mn/Box Office 4.5mn - it is self-indulgent twaddle that no audience wanted to see. Don't waste your time on it, is my tip.

As good as the films of Charlie Kaufman are who was expecting this titanically powerful, hideously funny of a crie de couer from a full & bloody heart? His films are always structured the same way: start from a small idea &, like an equation to create pattens, repeat it always a bit bigger until it cannot grow no more. It starts with a theater director wanting to do something good & ends up with the replacement of New York- acted to perfection by a master of character Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose shares in Kaufman's swan song for it is also Hoffman's. Is Hollywood a force of unimaginative banality? Yes, but here's the reason for hoping.
I bought this a) because it is written and directed by Charlie Kaufman (who also wrote 'Being Joh Malkovich') and b) because it was recommended by a BBC Film 2016 film critic. But it did not stand up at all to this recommendation or to the fact that Charlie Kaufman is a great writer for this film and the writing is second rate or worse. I found it uninteresting and self-obsessed. I got very bored with it I the first 20 minutes or so but, like an idiot, I stuck through it to towards the end expecting it to become something wonderful. It did not. The other big reason that I had for really wanting to love this film was simply Philip Seymour Hoffman, who I would watch peeling carrots but not in this film. I could not like or dislike his character, this was not the PSH I know and love.
