Mau, a young island boy, returns to his island to find that the village and everyone, his family and the whole Nation, have gone, swept away by a tidal wave. A ship has been driven ashore by the same wave and is wedged in the forest, the only two survivors of the shipwreck are a very proper young English girl, who chooses to be called Daphne, and a foul mouthed parrot. It's a beautifully written, touching sometimes funny story of how Mau and the trouserman girl Daphne get on together, with no common language, how the island is gradually repeopled by survivors of the wave,. How they cope with a cannibal invasion and make an astonishing discovery.Read full review
