I was a big fan of The Smiths when they originally came out, and played the cd's to death, so its been some years since I've been able to listen to them. I suddenly had the urge last week to wear brightly coloured, plastic beads, a flowery blouse and wave flowers around my head ! I couldn't afford to replace all of the albums I lost but then came across this cd, ' The Smiths "singles" '. It was an affordable way of getting a lot of their greatest hits. This cd consists of catchy fast songs like, 'What difference does it make ?' (with some excellent guitar playing by the fab Johnny Marr) to slow, melancholy numbers like ' Last night I dreampt that somebody loved me '. Often considered at the time as being a depressive band I never understood that label,as I find their work honest and tongue-in-cheek humourous. Morrissey simply sings the things we all think from time to time, but are too polite to say ! In his poetical words, " oh shut your mouth. How can you say I go about things the wrong way ? I'm human and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does. " This cd is very 'singable' and has some great dance numbers on it. If you've never experienced The Smiths before ( you've got it all ahead of you...you lucky people ! ) its a great introduction into the weird world of Morrissey. So, after hearing this cd, do I still love the band and songs after all of this time ? Does the fire still burn brightly for them ? OF COURSE IT DOES !! In the words of the great man himself, " there is a light that never goes out ".Read full review
I once had the entire Smiths collection on the original labels, but due to a brain storm sold my entire collection ( please reader never make that same mistake ), Well 7 years on and here I am buying cds again. I have started with this one and boy what a cd, loads of my favorites are here in one package, if you have never bothered with this band please spend around a fiver and buy this, a selection of just a few classics from a band that has influenced many a band since, Morrissey needs no introduction and the guitar playing of Marr is out of this world, all held together by superb bass and drums.......Give it a go.....You will not be disappointed.
I discovered this whilst browsing through random cd titles. Having bought all my Smiths collection on vinyl and now, not having a record player, thought it ideal to buy it on disc!!! It was low priced and came in excellent condition. I'm well pleased with it-the quality excellent, contents even better...all my favourite Smiths tracks on the one disc. I'm sure all Smiths fans are familiar with this album along with all the others. I can't fault it in any way as I love all the tracks. I especially love 'How soon is now' (fave Smiths track-also have 12 inch version on vinyl!!!)'Big mouth strikes again','I started something I couldn't finish' (morrissey's vocals really shine through on these)and finishes off with 'There is a light that never goes out'....love it love it LOVE IT!!!!! Can you tell i'm a fan-my hubby hates the Smiths and says all the tracks sound the same(boring!) but I totally disagree. This cd is Top!!!!!!Read full review
