This gadget allows the TomTom to present information about traffic delays on the route ahead, caused by road-works or other incidents. It offers alternative routes. In selecting routes, it is no better than Maps on the smartphone, but the TomTom gives additional useful information, such as current speed, time and distance remaining, so I prefer the TomTom combined with the Traffic Receiver to the smartphone as a driving aid. The smartphone reacts earlier than TomTom to possible problems ahead. Despite this, the Traffic receiver is certainly a valuable enhancement to the basic TomTom. Be sure to order the correct cable; some older TomToms have a mini USB socket instead of a micro USB.

This device uses a traffic updates signal that is transmitted over fm radio. Trouble is, this receiver doesn't always pick up that signal.. The other problem is that when a traffic jam does occur, someone somewhere presumably has to update/transmit a signal informing devices such as this. This obviously take time because, in the 2 weeks I've used this on a daily basis, I've been caught in at least 3 traffic jams. The system also wasn't aware of a recent road diversion. I like the fact that this makes my satnav feel complete/upgraded. In reality it hasn't really added much.
