The Taggart TV series is the longest running police series on TV. Most people would identify it with Mark McManus as the detective of the title, but the earlier programmes reveal a series very much in development. That is probably one of the few criticisms of this disc in that it does not give a number of continuous episodes, rather that they have been chosen as Classic material, but then that was what it said on the box! Here are three truly classic episodes. Knife Edge, the very first Taggart episode in which the characters gel and the production values and sctipt give a clear hint of what is to come (in the series) as the plot is as complicated as we have come to expect. The acting line-up is impressive with Alex Norton as a butcher with a secret to hide. Those in the know will realise that Alex now plays DCI Matt Burke who heads the Taggart team. Flesh and Blood is a tale in which a number of seemingly disparate stories are woven together. Involving explosives, an Irish hitman, a bakery and a Christmas treasure trail. Nest of Vipers completes the trio. Killings involving poisonous snakes and spiders are being used to cover up the traces of earlier murders. Need I say more? This is one of those episodes that stays with you. My wife saw a minute of the DVD episode and could tell me who the killer was and how he did it, despite not having seen the programme sincve it came out in 1992! All in all a great box set and a reminder of what top class TV should be like. A detective series than can bear comparison with Life on Mars.Read full review
