I was very fortunate to find a pair in almost mint condition. I also have a pair of Tannoy Little Red monitors, but because the 12" drive units are housed in a smaller enclosure the frequency response only goes down to 55Hz. They are wonderful speakers but the slight lack of bass extension did bother me slightly. The Cheviots on the other hand have the 12" dual-concentric housed in a larger enclosure and this allows them to produce a worthy response down to 40Hz. I've owned many, many speakers and always dreamed of owning a pair of vintage Tannoys, even though I'd never actually heard them in action. I would say they can be almost harsh in their honesty but therein lies their beauty. Most Hi-Fi speakers are designed to make music sound good, and there's nothing wrong with that. Tannoys were made to reproduce sincerely. On the Tannoys a bad recording sounds bad but a great recording sounds wonderful. You can feel the position of the player as his rendition was recorded. It makes you feel a bit like you were sitting behind the engineers desk. Not for all tastes maybe, and large, but these will blow away most other speakers unless you are prepared to spend thousands. That's my opinion anyway. Invest. While you can.Read full review
I've had many speakers over the years, but stopped looking when I got these. They just got it right. No compromises in any way. I use digital and analogue sources and quad amplification. All sorts of music.

This range of Tannoy speakers uses the HPD (High Performance Dual) concentric model driver. These are an 'evolution' from the earlier LSU or Monitor Gold type. They use a 15" cone for the ARDEN and BERKERLY, 12" for this, the CHEVIOT and DEVON and 10" for the EATON. The Cheviot is the middle of the range and is optimum size to produce good tonal balance. Buyers must beware of the certain and dreaded rot of the speaker suspension foam surrounds which plagues the HPD range (all except the 10" Eaton). If the surround has not yet been replaced then it will need to be done now. Lockwood audio are quite famous to undertake this 'refoaming' but at a cost of course. Once repaired the speakers should be good for another 15-25 years before it will need to be done again! The cabinets are well made but slightly lack sufficient internal bracing and lack adequate acoustic absorption. However, the resulting 'colouration' is in no way offensive or distracting. Indeed, most would argue it's a contribution to the unique Tannoy sound. Consider also the age of the internal crossover components and tone selector switches. The switches can become worn / dirty with age. This results in audible crackles and poor connections with even total loss of the treble in worst cases. Capacitors do degrade with age and should be replaced. The dual concentric aspect of the driver does produce the most millimetre perfect pin-point sound image. They can be enjoyed as monitors for near field listening as well as being very capable of filling a large size room. Once repaired these speakers still astound with superb imagery and tonal balance. Although prices are reaching silly levels now they are still worth considering. As always though, you should listen to them before buying. They may not be to everyone's taste.Read full review
