This is not an all action, guns blazing account of the war, instead it contains the kind of rare insight into a soldier's life that only becomes apparent after the fighting. David Finkel's book focuses on a group of Americian soldiers on their return home from the war in Iraq. While most soldiers adjust to civilian life without too many problems, some have to deal with the likes of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are all sorts of stories including one of a soldier who survives being inside a Humvee which is blown-up by an improvised land mine, with all the physical and mental scars associated with such an experience. Other soldiers talk about their PTSD, their terrifying experiences, flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks, and depression. Others discuss their attempts to kill themselves, their violence against loved ones, their inability to find and keep a job after they've left the military or how their experiences of war have had a lasting effect on their families and friends. This is not a book for the faint hearted, but your effort in reading it will be rewarded. The stories are touching and tragic, heart warming and shocking. This is a tribute to all those who have seen the worst that one person can inflict on another, and then live with the consequences that follow.Read full review
