The Battle of the River Plate is a film I saw first saw years ago as a young man, and it seems to have gotten better with time. The film has a cast of some of the Greatest Actors of our time, John Gregson, Anthony Quayle & Peter Finch Headline this film, Bernard Lee And Ian Hunter also Co-Star in this tale of one of the greatest battles of WW2. This film will have something just about everybody since it's not about war, but a fine story of the human spirit. And under $15 makes it a Great Buy Too!
The film recounts the 1st major naval action of World War 2 when the German 11" gun Graf Spee encountered the British and New Zealand 8" and 6" gun cruisers of the South Atlantic cruiser squadron comprising Exeter, Achilles, Ajax and latterly Cumberland. As this film was made in the mid 1950's several of the actual protagonists played themselves on film. The part of the Graf Spee was undertaken by the United States Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Salem. There are strong acting performances throughout and the film does not come across as dated. Although this is a war film with excellent action sequences, there is no blood and gore, making the film suitable for family viewing. It will appeal to the Naval Historian and average film viewer alike and supplies a few answers the question "What does it mean to be British?"Read full review
