The White Album was meant to be the record that brought the Beatles back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their songwriting powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of music's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have "legend" written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson Description THE BEATLES (generally known as "The White Album" because of its cover) was a sprawling two-record set, highlighting the distinct personalities in the group as they matured and moved further away from each other. With the four Beatles playing like session men on each other's songs, the making of the album was fraught with tension. John Lennon's songs included a bitter take on people who read too much into the Beatles' lyrics ("Glass Onion"), reflections on loneliness and alienation ("Yer Blues", "I'm So Tired"), and the avant garde sound collage "Revolution 9". George Harrison's songs offered black humor ("Piggies") and tender sadness ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps", with Eric Clapton on guitar). Paul McCartney provided both light, lyric songs ("Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da","Honey Pie"), and rockers ("Back In The U.S.S.R"., the explosive "Helter Skelter"). Ringo Starr made his solo songwriting debut with the goofy country/ska lilt of "Don't Pass Me By" and sang the album closer "Good Night".Read full review
when the world was mad about the beatles, i was more into cream, deep purple, free etc; but my brother bought me this album for my christmas (only because he wanted to hear it) it kinda grew on me. it disappeared the same year, later found out he sold it..the joy of chritmas eh? tried to get the album at various markets etc; to no avail. then woe and behold the age of the laptop came into my life and there it was on ebay in d.v.d. form. i listened to it and you know what? it didn't sound the same as it did to me all those years ago when i played the l.p. on my wee record player that my auntie jenny bought me with embassy coupons.maybe i'll sell it for more headbanger music eh? but still goes to show, you always findn it in ebay. but alas will i ever find those majic years when we were young and everything seemed better than it is today? still a good d.v.d. though and the tunes stay inside your head. i remembered all the songs vividly, and knew the words which surprised me as i was never a singer ,and the music was all i listened to. hope, like me it will stir up memories for you? now i'm away to listen to status quo.4yrs and i'm a pensioner but my taste in music will always be the same. keep on rocking folksRead full review
My friend and I went to see the Bootleg Beatles in concert at the City Hall, Newcastle. I had lost my son a few months previous and asked for a dedication. They were very sensitive about this and played My Guitar Gentley Weeps. I hadnt heard this before and when I found it was on the White Album, decided that I must have it. It's a lovely track and was so pleased when I saw I could buy it off ebay. There are a lot of tracks on there I don't like but that one track makes up for all the rest.
Simply Beatles - the best pop-rock band of all times which inspires musicians till today! WHite album is beside Abbey road my favourite - strongly recommended is you still don't have a copy.
