About this product

Product Information

You've heard of the Horse Whisperer - now meet the woman who uses similar methods to train dogs. Jan Fennell's remarkable gifts have earned her the nickname the dog listener . Her unique understanding of the canine world and its instinctive language has enabled her to bring even the most desperate and delinquent of dogs to heel. This easy-to-follow guide to understanding Jan's simple techniques draws on her countless case histories of problem dogs - from biters and barkers to bicycle chasers - to show how we can bridge the language barrier that separates man from his best friend. In The Dog Listener Jan shares her secrets, telling us how she grew determined to find a more compassionate alternative to standard obedience training techniques and ultimately how to communicate with canines.

Good tips in understanding your dog or dogs

I personally like the way Jan Fennel explains simply following the first chapter. She realised what was happening with her own dogs and the hierarchy they were creating. Plus she explains where she had been going wrong with her dogs, for example, in just taking them for a walk. Also how her dogs greet her and barking when visitors came. So simple when she explains. The trigger for her was when she bought a German Shepherd puppy and watched the dogs behaviour. She realised that dogs work from body language and not from someone shouting at them. Told more like a story and not a tutorial

  • A good book full of advice. a must for all dog owners.

As a dog owner i was intrigued to learn more about man's best friend and i wasn't dissapointed. Jan goes into a lot of detail on different problems, that as dog owners we all face at some time. She is very clear in her attempts to train us to think about the messages we are sending out to our dogs. For someone who is very loving of their dog it may well pull at the old heart strings to even contemplate ignoring your pet as it procedes to smother you with so called [affection]. I didn't think i would be able do it, and almost gave up on the book before reading it through. But i'm glad i didn't. Each parragraph draws you more and more into reasons for this method of training. This book was a really good read and if like me you don't think you could carry out the training methods, just read ...

  • Dog Listening

I haven’t read all of this book yet as I need to go slowly and take it in. For me there’s a lot to learn!!! I find the art of dog listening is fascinating and I intend to use this method to train my Shih-Poo Teddy. All I can say is it’s worth a try.

  • some dated ideas and a bit long winded but a very helpful guide

I lost my previous copy and found it very useful in the long process of turning round a rescue dog who came to live with me from being terrified and reactive to other dogs to being calm an enjoying life. I now have another rescue dog and there are issues which are not resolved and others which have developed. I am looking for this book again! So I ordered this and as a used copy it was very good value and in very good condition and better than my last copy as in hard back which is better for a reference book I regularly dip into.

  • a real though set and eye opener to understanding

it gave me a clear insight to what i have felt, but not understood about our companion dogs. the meany mistakes i have made in the past with my companions and my incorrect understanding of what my dogs have been trying to tell me and the unnecessary burden and stress. ow, how simple to have avoided. but better late than never. nigel londt.
