As a person interested in old books, It was only time before I discover the many types of old school annuals/Childrens' annuals and other thick tomes that passed many a child's time away before computers, television (and even radio) entered our homes. I have never seen this book for sale in Australia, so I decided to obtain a copy for comparison. This is a great little volume to read if you are over 60 years and can remember your old annuals (e.g.Chatterbox, School Friend, The Champion, and etc.) which have since been recycled or composted. If there is one gripe to make, why three column of text per page? Two columns would have been acceptable. I found the articles a real insight to how the annuals were presented 100 years ago, and earlier, (first impressions made me recall books from the 1890's!) and rather surprising to see how WE have changed over the years. It is not a book written for twelve year old girls of today, but would suit a mature girl/young lady who has a little free-time on her hands, away from her I-pad and mobile phone. The stories are either lifted from old annuals or are very well written in the style of writing of those day. A little knowledge of the old imperial system of weights and measures may be needed to try the cooking recipes, otherwise, giggle at the swimming costumes, chuckle at the stories and let yourself be taken back 100 years to a simpler time where electrical appliances were still a thing of the future.Read full review
