The Jam album which is not fairly named. The title "Extras" suggests that it is packed with extra tracks not previously available elsewhere. True, there are some, but many others are B-Sides which will already be well-known to fans of the band. Sadly, many of the "extras" turn out to be nothing more than solo Paul Weller demos, for instance: Liza Radley, No One in the World, Burning Sky, Thick as Thieves, Hey Mister and a demo of Saturday's Kids (to which Bruce has kindly adds his bass.) Still, I suppose that it's nice to hear the origin of some classics. Some highlights include The Jam's demo version of A Solid Bond In Your Heart (the name of The Jam's penultimate tour and later a more polished hit single for The Style Council), the James Brown cover I Got You (I Feel Good), the Beatles cover And Your Bird Can Sing (although it surely could have been a little more rough) and the studio demo of the Small Faces' Get Yourself Together. However, if there is one track alone which makes this album worth buying, then it is We've Only Started. This is a completely different (and better) song set to a toughened-up Tales From The Riverbank and, I kid you not, surely must be in the all-time Top 10 songs of The Jam. Well worth a pound or two.Read full review
