An epic series that I will no doubt enjoy for years to come. I highly recommend to those of adventurous spirit. You will not be dissapointed. It has caused me to no only find other Tolkien DVD's but his writings as well. I find his writings not only creatively written but wondrously appealing. For one who has never held an interest in reading novels, I am now an avid fan of his writings.

The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (2004, DVD),extended edition with some additional materials. As the DVD's have been released in various cuts, I first suggest you get this one, it is the best of the series. Obviously there were many directorial decisions made to 'boil down' the text for adaptation into a movie, so in addition to the DVD you should also own a text copy of the original novels. This allows you to see the tremendous number of difficulties that Peter Jackson had in adapting the Tolkien work into a film trilogy. Having said that, I must also say that Jackson's work is at the level of the very best. He wisely stayed in close touch with thousands of fans, and used them and their feedback to steer the production and editing of the theatrical(and subsequent) releases. Many director's would lack the wisdom to so effectively use this admiring fanbase (or, perhaps, lack the time and budgetary freedom to do so). Regardless, Jackson's adaptation of Tolkien's masterpiece is one of the crowning accomplishments of the cinematographic arts and sciences of the past century. There will be another Lord of the Rings brought to life in the next century, using tools and methods which are not yet known. It would seem about every twenty to thirty years we see another adaptation of some popular film or novel. However, given the film industry as it currently stands, with the distribution channels (and after-markets), this is absolutely one of the best of all DVD releases you could ever hope to own, and it will continue to hold its own well into the next century. Perhaps the holographic adaptation created in the year 2035 AD will sweep the Oscars, and maybe fully incorporate the entire text (will the audience sit still for 120 hours to see it?), but this is the absolutely benchmark adaptation that all followers will have to acknowledge.Read full review
This trilogy of movies cover the entire "Lord of the Rings" story, but each movie is a stand alone story. That being said, it certainly is more entertaining to binge watch all three in short order. That makes it easier to keep the characters straight and the story lines make more sense. The story is pretty complex and at times a bit difficult to follow, but even during the parts where I got confused, it all made sense in the end. The CGI work is awesome, and the scenery from New Zealand and Australia was magnificent. Some may think the scenery can't be real, but I just returned from a trip to Australia and New Zealand and can attest to the fact that those places really do exist. The music, scenery, characters, CGI, acting and story all combine to make this a wonderful movie set to own.Read full review

I am not normally a fantasy type movie person. I had only just watched the Lord of the rings Trilogy for the first time about a month ago. This was by far one of the best movies I have EVER seen. If you have not seen this you are missing out. I rented the first one because everyone kept telling me great it was. I watched it and right away was hooked. I could not tear myself away. After I watched the first one, right away I popped in the 2nd. I didn't sleep all night and had to stay home from work the next day to finish all of the movies. It was that good. You get a feel for all of the characters and you will laugh and cry with them along their journey. The visual aids and scenery are breathtaking. I actually watched it twice because there is so much information that you have to take in I wanted to make sure that I understood everything. It's even better the 2nd time!!!! This is a must have trilogy!!!!Read full review
