The vague sense of discomfort ( and melancholy) at the very outset of this novel, NEARLY discouraged me from seeing it through to completion. But, boy am I glad I stuck it out! Sittenfield does not disappoint with her sophomore novel, and I know I may not be alone in this, but I almost felt as if I could sue for copywriting or libel even....because the book could very well have been written about ME! However, its a fictional Hannah Gavener who perfectly orchestrates the tale of her uncomfortable quest for the "perfect relationship." There is that ever oppresive unrequited love, as she despairs of ever finding Mr. Right. She is nearly discouraged after coming close three times! At some points the blatant reality of the novel made me vaguely miserable, as Sittenfield sits right on the pulse point of a young woman's feminine angst, but this book was good stuff...not ordinary, chick-lit fluffed up, beach reads. I bought it because I wanted the realism, I enjoyed her first novel and this one read just like the older sister to her first novel: "Prep". Loved it! SSM.Read full review
