When viewed today The New Avengers is actually a very good action series. It has its faults as all series do (some of the scripts are pretty bad and the 1970s fashions-oh dear!) but it is always entertaining. The comparison with the original series is inevitable which is unfortunate. You can't top a classic so in that respect the New Avengers can't win. However, it is a very different series, both in style and types of story. Gone are the diabolical masterminds intent on destroying the world. In its place are stories about a giant rat, a renegade army and a man who can control birds. Great fun! And there is a nod to the past with the return of the famous robots, the Cybernauts ("last of the Cybernauts...?") and a cameo by Emma Peel ("K is for kill part 1" taken from old footage). And when compared to other action series of the time (particularly Charlie's Angels) it stands out. In my opinion this is greatly helped by the chemistry between the three lead actors. You can feel the respect between them. And because of Patrick Macnee whatever faults the series had it always had class. Worth buying.Read full review
I decided to buy this in memory of Gareth Hunt who died recently. The DVD set had been deleted but I found it on eBay and was delighted with it, although one episode was slightly faulty and stopped playing a few seconds from the end. It brought back a lot of happy memories, and replaces my badly recorded VCR collection of episodes.
Bought this DVD set as one of my very early purchases on eBay, in fact I think it was the first item I bid for an item.I wasn't familiar with bidding and basically paid twice as much as I could have done. Now, I'm a lot for familiar with eBay and bidding and have been extremely happy with my deals and service, feedback etc. To anyone reading this, take my advice, don't buy or bid for the first match you see of a particular item, shop around, compare, take your time and most of all, be patient. If the bidding gets high, stop, it's no harm to be outbid, look again for the same item and you'll probably find it cheaper and maybe in better condition. Good hunting!!
