In April 2006 the beautiful June Pointer died. She was just 52. And if you have to say “Who was she?”, you’re no Babyboomer or you are and your interest in music went no further than the Moody Blues, Yardbirds or ended in the mid 60s. June of the Pointer Sisters first started making music as a young teenager. She experimented with drugs at 13 and just a couple of years later was performing with her sisters in clubs and as backing singers to some big names in the USA. Later she duetted with Dionne Warwick (are you sure that the “w” is silent?) on her album “Reservations For Two”. Always lively, she remains one of those characters whom one should have enjoyed a beer with to enjoy the company and hope that something else developed. The Pointer Sisters had a string of hit singles from 1971 onwards but for me the top song was “Automatic” Planet Records 1984. As rock music is/was such a big issue with babyboomers, no boomer website would be complete without some coverage of it and The Pointer Sisters can't be missed out. You might have grown out of it, or perhaps moved on to greater things, but you listened to it in the 60s because you could not avoid it. Pirate radio did it for me. Because the government of the day got very cross with the likes of Radio Caroline with its requests show and Radio London (“Wonderful Big L”), we all sat up and took notice, wanting the pirates to win the battle with the Postmaster General of the day. And boy weren’t they an improvement on Radio Luxembourg with its fading signal and too much talk instead of playing music. Sad to say, the cheaply run and officially disliked but hugely popular pirate stations did not survive and we all know what replaced them. And pretty well every one of us knows what the first disc was that good old Tony Blackburn played on the first day of Radio One. If you don’t know, well maybe you weren’t really around then or else you have managed to miss pretty well every trivia quiz played on radio and television ever.Read full review
