Clearly a journalistic account set in a desolate Mexican scene. This highly entertaining narrative provides a bitter taste of the Christian persecution by the Mexican authority. There is a priest, a very imperfect one, fearful, and careless. The author brings out the element of humanity, with all its imperfections. The distinction between good and bad people fades away as the story progresses. Ultimately, there is always a positive element in all of us, whether good and bad. Although the narrative evolves around religion (after all that's what this author is famous for), this book appears to be mainly intended to explain our frail but beautiful inner qualities. It shows the element of hope and determination. This book also intend to show what saints are actually made of, far from the exaggerated pious narratives typically depicted by the Church. This book can be inspiring to any reader, irrespective of his/her religion believes (including atheists). This is surely one of Greene's masterpieces, and some might argue that this is his best one of them all.Read full review

Brilliant book. Far greater luminaries than me have already extolled how powerful and how well written this book is so I need add no more other than to say I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and recommend it for others to do so as well.
