This is an odd book in many ways, in terms of its structure and format, but ultimately very useful, and in parts a very good read. I say "in parts" because at times it is like a dictionary, so "in parts" better for reference rather than reading through; and because of the nature of the book, there is quite a lot of repetition (retelling of certain events referred to earlier on). However, for someone wanting to know about Evangelicalism (especially from an outside perspective) I think this does a good job of covering the main aspects and issues, without being too polemic or dogmatic. Some may see that as a weakness, but I have come to appreciate the writings of Olson. He is Arminian himself (and I am not), but he always deals with subjects in a fair and balanced way (something that Evangelicalism often is not), so is a book likely to inform without offending. The first two chapters are good for giving an historical overview and definition, and the last one for setting its contemporary status.Read full review
