I realy enjoyed this cd,they are easy listening, brilliant to play on a long journey and sing along to.i would recommend it without hessitation.
Where do you pigeon hole The Script, the latest hot property from Dublin? Well for me don't even try, as there is really no need. This is just a really “great” album and I don’t use that tag very often. It is quite rare to come across an album that plays well from start to end with no “skip that one” tracks. I first heard “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” as record of the week on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 morning programme and was immediately impressed. YouTube would be a great tool for hearing it repeatedly over the next few weeks and this of course led me to “We Cry” their first single which was a track I knew I’d heard somewhere before. The wait for the album would be long and with high expectancy as more tracks appeared on YouTube. The aforementioned “We Cry” kicks the album off in great style. Faced pace, high production and a thumping drum and bass rhythm section driving it throughout. A subtle mix of piano and intricate percussion opens “Before The Worst” which is another pacey track again led supremely by the rhythm section. At this point in time I haven’t a clue what’s it about but it has an “edge” and an “anger” to me and I love it. “Talk You Down” is a favourite. I love the way it starts with such expectancy with a simple two key piano riff over a synthesizer background before breaking into a delightful rhythm, which holds it throughout. The track breaks (with anger) as part of the chorus, which you’ll be signing after just a couple of listens. The excellent “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” pops up next. I wont review it because you should all know it by now. Four tracks of such high quality and we’ve really only just begun! “Breakeven” includes some great guitar work and is another piece of high quality. These guys really can play and the writing of both music and lyrics shine through as a strength. I am a very critical person by nature and if this album does have a weak track then for me it’s “Rusty Halo”. I’ll leave you to make your own view. “The End Where I Began” gets the album right back on track for me. Switching from a somewhat slow “sing along anthem”, which will work well should this band realise their potential and end up playing in huge stadiums, to break out pieces of pure rock. “Fall For Anything” - just another high quality track. At the risk of repeating myself it’s a solid rhythm, well played and hugely catchy. “If You See Kay” should make you smile and you’ll annoy your friends once the chorus gets ingrained in your head and believe me it won’t take long. I’ll leave you to work it out, but suffice to say despite the “humour” factor it’s just a brilliant track. I love it. The guys really show their potential on the penultimate track “I’m Yours”. Great lyrics, soulfully sung, and some well-played guitars make this beautiful ballad a track of supreme quality and given what the message is there’s not an ounce of “smulch” here - just a band at their peek given this is their first album. Sadly we close with “Anybody There” another tip-top track and then (all too soon for me) it’s all over. Press the play button again and you will over and over and over. Buy it now - I cannot recommend it highly enough.Read full review
The Script have succeeded where many have failed. They have come up with the perfect blend of R'n'B wrapped in a well crafted 'classic indi' guitar based coat of many colours. The time honoured themes of love, life and the working man have been transformed, through lyrics that don't waste a single word, into songs that instantly grip your attention, then grow into your mind revealing new depth and meaning each time you listen. A small lapse into profanity on track one did seem unnecessary at first, but with hindsight is not gratuitous, reflecting the world we live in rather than any attempt to shock it. Take all of the above, fold in a dynamic soulful voice, soaring melodies, a bang on base and I suspect a fair bit of life experience, and you get an album and a band that is head and shoulders above the humdrum sea of sameness around today. I give it Five Stars and both thums up!Read full review
This is the best CD I've bought in a long time and I can honestly say there isn't a single filler track on it. Everything about it is pure quality. The songs, lyrics, musicianship and production are all first class. My favourite track is the hauntingly beautiful "I'm Yours" which is stunning in its simplicity. Daniel O'Donoghue has written the perfect modern love song here and his lyrics are sheer poetry. Which girl couldn't love the man in this song, thinking he's not much and pouring out his soul? I will never tire of this song or the entire album and I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who appreciates musical craftmanship.
My daughter actually introduced me to this music on a recent trip and I have to say that it made such an impression on me that I bought the cd myself. They are a young Dublin band and having married into the tradition of good Irish music, The Script does not disappoint. It's not folk music but it's good rock/pop music with a traditional standard of story-telling in the lyrics and, even though I am fastly appraoching my 60s, I can listen to this music over and over again!!
