I bought this book as it is the first of a series and wasn't available at my local library. It is a great read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. It places the hero, a young Roman centurian (Cassius) in an isolated fort, who has to overcome many obstacles to hold the fort and win the day. It is a great read and should be enjoyed by anyone who likes the works of Bernard Cornwell, Douglas Jackson, Conn Iggulden and Simon Scarrow. The second book in the series is 'The Imperial Banner' which is also very good. Nick Brown is an excellent author of historical fiction. I can't wait for his next offering.
A nice little story and a good start to what I hope is a series of books . failry fast moving to keep you interested with some characters that you can get interested in. I like books on this era and can be a bit of a geek about the historical details, this isn't a book you need to be a geek with.... You don't have to be particularly interested in Ancient Rome to enjoy this book.
