Everyone remembers Do Wah Diddy and Pretty Flamingo, but the Fontana Years, with Mike D'Abo replacing Paul Jones on vocals, is just as good as the Manfreds earlier hits. In fact, most of the tracks are slightly odd, making them more interesting than their earleir songs - Semi Detached Surburban Mr James and Ha! Ha! Said The Clown have elements of psychedelia, Sweet Pea and A 'B' Side are very jazzy, Mighty Quinn represents their only number 1 for Fontana, and Feeling So Good is a cracking 'b' side worthy of hit status. Don't overlook this period in favour of the EMI catalogue - it is just as good, and far more varied in influences.
