Of all the William Horwood 'sequels', this is the one where the tone comes closest to the original. The others went straight to the local charity shop but I am keeping this one to re-read.

William Horwood has made a fair stab at recreating Kenneth Grahame's much loved 1908 characters, and these books are generally a great read both for kids and adults. However, it has to be said that the stories are all much the same, and he couldn't resist introducing his rather mawkish mysticism, so the characters become steadily more gloomy and fatalistic. If you are new to all this, The Willows at Christmas is a good book to start with, but be warned, they live out their lives and grow old and die, and presumably move on to a better place.
