Throne Of Blood is Kurosawa-san's take on Shakespeare's Macbeth. This truly is a wonderful version of the classic tale of greed, paranoia, murder and betrayal. Lovingly filmed in a Noh drama style, this film drips with tension right up until the inevitable ending, which for me is pretty spectacular in it's own right. I love this film with a passion and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys timeless classics.
Kurosawa is without doubt one of the most influential film directors of the 20th century, who influence can be seen in everything from popular Westerns (Fistfull of Dollars and Magnificant Seven) to science fantasy (The Star Wars Trilogy). Putting him together with one of the worlds greatest playwrites and you get a masterpiece, which this film is. In this film Kurosawa pushes the limits, and gets away with it. What with any other director would be over the top gore, becomes atmospheric mood in this rendition of terror. In reinterpreting Macbeth to a Japanes theme, Kurosawa has kept true to the meaning of the original, yet given it a depth and expression that is truely Japaneses and beyond anything Shakespeare could have imagined. A great film and well worth watching.
