I've been aware of Valérian since the 1970s, and although I've enjoyed the art I have never been able to read his adventures -- because I don't speak French. Well, the books are now available in English translation, and I'm a happy guy. Not only are these book superbly drawn by Jean-Claude Mézières, I'm happy to say that the text, by Pierre Christin, is every bit the equal of the art. THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS is the first book in the graphic novel series (though the second Valérian adventure to be published), but we don't get much backstory, being instead dropped right into the middle of an adventure as Valérian and Laureline are sent back in time to 1986 New York City to head off the schemes of a time-traveling bad guy, whom they eventually confront outside the city of Brasilia. Valérian is a classic good-guy, but his assistant Laureline is smarter than he is. Together the two of them romp through space and time combatting evil. The art is a bit cartoonish, but outstanding in its depiction of alien worlds and their bizarre inhabitants. Highly recommended.Read full review
