With the early 80's, Thatcherism, and the Falklands conflict as it's backdrop, Shane Meadows' THIS IS ENGLAND tells a personal semi-autobiographical story of Shaun, a pre-teen boy who has lost his father in combat and now needssomething or someone to cling to while doubting what it means to be 'English'. Unfortunately, a racist skinhead and his followers are only too willing to take Shaun under their wing... Meadows' delivers a modern classic of a soundtrack to pair with his powerful film, flitting between 80's school disco classics such as Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' and Dexy's 'Come on Eileen', and a resonant, piano-led score specially composed by the Italian maestro Ludovico Einaudi. We also get a history lesson of how - almost ironically - the roots of the skinhead movement were influenced heavily by reggae, ska, and a predominantly black music scene. The soundtrack features stirring cuts by Toots & The Maytals, The Specials and even Percy Sledge, all interspersed with snippets of Meadows' memorable dialogue - the overall effect is not only highly eclectic, but mesmerisingly evocative and, at times, poignant and emotional. All in all, this is a fabulously researched and compiled musical document, and deserves comparison with some of the great movie soundtracks of the last decade, from Pulp Fiction to Trainspotting. Excellent stuff and a must have for any fan of the movie.Read full review
The music on this soundtrack is just simply fantastic. From the opening wailing voice of Toots & the Maytals, a couple of '80s pop classics to the soft beautiful incidental music by Lucovico Einaudi. Every track is worthy of careful listening. Other standout tracks include Percy Sledge singing "Dark Side of the Street" and Clayhill's moving cover of The Smiths "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". Another plus is unlike some soundtracks everything you hear in the film is featured in chronological order as it is in the film. The only downside is the dialogue taken from the film. Although this is a common trend amongst modern film soundtracks, on here it doesn't quite work as some of the pieces chosen aren't as funny or poignant in the edited form in which they appear on here. However, if you find them too irritating you can always skip them.Read full review
