What makes this album stand out from most other Reggae and Ska compilations is that it's what I call "proper," meaning that there is no sign whatsoever of any of the usual suspects that seem to hog Reggae compilations. None of the commercial, chart stuff; it's Reggae at its purist before it was watered down to make it more appealing to a wider audience. I chose this particular album on the strength of one song from the late 60s that I hadn't heard since around 1969. Many of the other songs I hadn't heard of, although I'd heard of the artists, but it's a fantastic listen. Anyone out there who is new to Reggae and wants to get an idea of what it was like before it started hitting the pop charts; this is the album for you!
