"The Virgin Suicides". Buying the Virgin Suicides, I assumed would be the most depressing moment in my life, because basically the idea of 5 teenage girls, all sisters, deciding to, as the title suggests, commit suicide (and if you think I just ruined the story, buy the book and read the blurb) did not in any way interest me at all. But I bought it anyway. Because I'm awfully stubborn. And my friend bet me £5 I wouldn't read it. Yet the whole thing about this book is that it's not based around a surprise ending or a crazy twist, it's based on emotions and basic humanity. It questions our existence; the whole first world problems of being a thirteen year old girl. The ideology of insanity; is it inherited or environmental? Jeffrey Eugenides writes as someone who has almost figured out everything, who has looked into some great abyss and has taken this experience to write. It's insightful and beautiful. A harrowing story told with such great clarity that if someone told me it was based on fact; I would believe. Sometimes descriptions over run, we get lost in the narrative but overall it's worthwhile. The story is fantastic, the writing impeccable. He weaves these fantastic stories about these enigmatic girls and we feel a gaping hole once we finish. To be honest, I don't care that by the end we are no further in the case of the story of these girls than the start but THAT IS THE POINT. Eugenides doesn't want us to figure them out when he himself can't. And that's why you have to read the Virgin Suicides. 5 stars.Read full review
Interesting novel that I enjoyed but found very weird. The book was quite battered (which I don't mind) but the cover was different to the picture. Good price.

I read this book a few weeks ago and it's really stuck with me, I was mesmerised by Eugenides unique prose and the ethereal, mysterious Lisbon girls. I would heartily recommend this book.
