I'm a big Don Winslow fan and there are many great crime writers out there, Michael Dibden, Michael Connolly, Donald Westlake, Ian Rankin. Winslow is right up there with books like Power of the Dog, The Winter of Frankie Machine, Savages and also Satori. Cal Fire and Life has many intricately weaved plots and would make a great film. It's also very incredibly interesting to read about the nature of fires, and how fire investigators like the lead character Jack Wade, "read" a fire and what can be learnt about how they start and the destructive forces. The physics elements and investigative techniques are great to read. The characters and the pace and the sheer scale of the plots make very rewarding reading. Don't delay - buy one today.
