After 14 years of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Ship Simulator 2008 began to interest me because of my Transport Management background and Honours Degree in a directly related discipline beforehand. Therefore as the words of a 'Driver' as opposed to a 'Passenger' this honest appraisal of SS2008 firstly welcomes you to an experience which allows you to both learn and build up your experience and knowledge in a most rewarding way. Your smallest available Craft is the agile, fun Jet-Ski which can be used in any environment. However this is also where the learning of the basics begins in terms of steering, power setting and then combining the two as locations-wise you are able to familiarise yourself with them all. You are strongly urged to take this learning and building attitude and approach to what is on offer in SS2008 because of the way that this challenging but most rewarding Simulator quickly develops in terms of being about 'Commanding' as opposed to just 'Cruising' at sea. Therefore it's definitely not a plug, play and in the biggest ship available to select type of experience. Instead it is a case of starting with the wrong approach leading to all the wrong results in terms of being lost, disorientated and disappointed as indeed would be the case in real life. Be patient and bear in mind that although the largest Vessels available for selection represent the largest and heaviest 'vehicles' on the planet in this particular mode of transport. An industry that is principally based on creating 'Solutions' instead of 'Problems' in real life as well as being a true case of when it is good it is very, very good. But when it is bad it is horrid ... like this will get for those 'Cruisers' who just want lot of big 'cool' boats to see in a world meant for 'Commanders' who actually know what they are doing with them: Like knowing how to 'drive' for starters! Ask yourself what you would like to become at this juncture: Commanders read on whereas Cruisers are strongly urged to reconsider and find out which version of 'The Sims' is the one with all the cruise ships in it (Rumour has it actually that one of them is the 'Poseidon' from the 2006 Movie!) Remember to learn, build, think on your feet and know if not better your environment or surroundings as you progress through what is presented to you by Ship Simulator 2008: Take responsibility and make decisions about your progression, development and transfers-upwards with all being well through the Tonnage Brackets. Add to the rewarding nature and extent of what is available for you to achieve throughout this Simulator too. Be firstly there as the Manager, whose there to manage above all and then transfer to being the Commander as discussed before. Then as Manager once again present yourself with greater challenges by arranging your own weather in great detail but through the use of an easy to understand interface as well as write your own 'Missions' using the SS2008 Mission Editor facility. Regard it as being 'your reward for working hard' that is awaiting you when you have accumulated what's required to use it effectively. To conclude may I thank you firstly for reading this appraisal beyond which it's Your Call: 'Full Ahead' bearing in mind that 'Full Steam Ahead' was last heard being said by Leslie Nielsen in 1973 (as Captain Harrison in 'The Poseidon Adventure!') Ship Simulator 2008 is one of my best PC Game purchases of all time: Best wishes from me for those who wish to make it theirs too.Read full review
