This is particularly good for severing dandelion roots growing in a lawn where it is not practical to dig the plant out, and you don't want to use weedkiller, and similarly useful when dock, dandelions, etc are growing in a bed close to plants that shouldn't be disturbed. Pushed in at an angle it is easy to cut the root 2cm-3cm below soil level and then pull out the top of the root with the leaves. They may grow back the next year or later in the season but will be weakened and repeating the task will eventually kill them off if they don't die the first year. I have just bought a replacement after my last one broke where the blade joins the handle, but that was after many years use. As delivered it has a tapered but blunt end so a few strokes with a half-round file will put a sharp edge on the end and make it more effective.Read full review

A good strong blade attached to a comfortable well sized handle giving excellent grip. The blade is long enough to deal with deep rooted weeds, and strong enough to lever them out. The end is 'sharp', but not knife-type sharp, enabling the user to bore into hard soils and lumps of soil. We had an earlier version of this tool. The same blade, but a less shaped and comfortable handle. The new design is a definite improvement. The family use both tools when out weeding, the older tool having survived 12 years of frequent use. It shows slight scratching on blade and handle but nothing has cracked or snapped. I would think that the new tool should last just as well as it is a solid job.

Within 10 minutes of receiving it, I'd weeded the bed at the side of the path in our back garden, admittedly it's only 25ft long, but this tool made light work of the job. Wish I'd known about it sooner, the best garden tool I've ever used, saves back breaking work on your hands and knees, and leaves the soil looking good.

This is in my top five of gardening essentials - in fourth place (even beating a trowel). It’s next on the list after a lightweight border garden fork, spade and secateurs. It’s invaluable for removing long- stemmed weeds, such as dandelions. I use mine constantly, every time I garden and always give one as an introductory gift to newbie gardeners, alongside a weeding tub a pair of secateurs and gardening gloves. A little known secret gem in the gardening community.

I would cautiously recommend this because I believe it would be easy to mislead people into thinking it would withstand use in hard soil . I do not believe this to be the case but it is without doubt a useful tool and of fairly good quality
