Despite its titl, this book is mainly, but not exclusively, short stories by the novelist Evelyn Waugh. For example,'Work Suspended' is in fact the first chapters of a novel that Waugh began in 1938 or 1939 and abandoned after the war broke out; it is nevertheless some of his finest writing. 'Charles Ryder's Schooldays' may be a fragment of 'Brideshead Revisited', which Waugh later abandoned. 'Scott-King's Modern Europe' is a novella; also very good. Of the short stories proper, 'Basil Seal Rides Again' is the funniest; the anti-hero Basil Seal, even after WWII, in which he served in the Army Commandos, is as cunning and villainous as ever. These stories are right for bedtime reading; bite-sized and very satisfying; all the better for being so very un-PC.
