I love this book, plain and simple. This is the iRiver Story HD model, not the standard story. You can tell them apart by the keyboard, the story has square white keys and the HD has narrow orange keys. The 6inch screen is nice and clear, and is of a higher resolution than most, being 1024X768 vs the standard of 800X600. The book's size makes it comfortable for me to hold, with large hands the 5 inch books are a little small to handle for extended periods. The keyboard is nice and responsive, and the navigation bar feels good when using it to turn pages, lots of reassuring clicks. The 2GB onboard storage isn't a lot these days, but it has an SD card slot which'll take a 32gig card, so you can put a lot of books onto the unit with a little additional outlay. Initial bootup time from cold isn't bad, and waking up from sleep mode is pretty quick. The battery life on my unit isn't great, four short books and a little wifi activity drained it but I dont know its charging history so your mileage may vary. The wifi seemed very power hungry, so I keep mine in airplane mode with all wifi turned off. The unit only has wifi, no 3G or other cell services. Charging is by USB of course. Note that this ebook does not support audiobooks of any kind and has no audio output at all, but that's no loss really. Thats what an MP3 player is for ;) There are many features that other books have, mostly online services such as 3G connectivity, linked highlighting and such that the kindle family have that this does not, but honestly, its all stuff that I'd never use anyway - ever picked up a real book in a library and found that someone has highlighted over passages? Not something I look for in an ebook. However, since some people do look for extras like that, I've marked 'Features' down to reflect this. The high resolution page means that the text can get quite a bit smaller than other ebooks, which makes the several size options as well as the overall zoom function very useful. It also means that you can squeeze more into a page without it being distorted or clipped to fit, or having to scroll the page about to view a bit at a time, very handy for PDF files. However, despite the different sizes you can choose there is only one standard font. While it is a perfectly clear font, most books offer a range to select from these days as well as margin, header and footer controls, which the Story HD also lacks. Stylewise the overall look is a little retro I think. The colours used, the brown of the unit's back casing and the orange of the keys, gives the unit a "70s futuristic" feel I think. Overall as a simple, reliable book, this ranks in at #1 for me. As a bonus, it has a complete English dictionary onboard which has been said by others to be more informative than the kindle's dictionary.Read full review
