Once I decided to get a smartphone, the choice wasn't difficult to make: as an owner of several Lenovo PCs I knew it would have to be a Lenovo, and as a latecomer to the world of smartphones I went with design over everything else, which left only one: the 5.5-inch K900 featuring 2GB RAM, 16GB storage and 2GHz Intel Atom z2580. DESIGN: First launched in early 2013, the K900 is old by smartphone standards, but its sleek and business-like design manages to stand out in a very crowded 2015 field. With its thin and angular shape (157 x 78 x 6.9 mm) and the solid feel of the metal case (162 grams), it basically makes all the curvy and soft-edged phones look and feel like clunky kiddie toys, including iPhones and Samsungs. CONS: Technologically, the K900 shows its age in the OS available (Android 4.2.1) and the battery used (2500 mAh). Of these, the battery will be the more annoying issue, requiring daily recharge even with moderate, mixed usage. Compared to other phones available in 2015, the K900 obviously takes a beating on most counts, except camera and audio: the speakers are the best in the business, and the 4K camera (13 MP rear, 2 MP front) keeps up with the competition without problems. But when subjected to benchmark tests, it will show its age with an AnTuTu score of only 23,035, a far cry from the 60,000+ score achieved by e.g. LG and Samsung. Most, if not all, K900s have to be bought online from Far-Eastern shops that may or may not ship devices with pre-installed Google apps, i.e. 'rooted'. Make sure that your K900 is 'rooted' - unless you're really tech-savvy and willing to risk 'bricking' your device. The Corning Gorilla Glass 2 IPS panel (1920 x 1080) is clearly inferior to 2015 phones with the latest Gorilla specs, and it attracts and retains fingerprints with maddening visibility. You may have to clean the panel several times a day. It doesn't affect operation but it looks grimy. PROS: The K900 is the most stylish and attractive smartphone available today. I absolutely love the razor-edged and very thin design, and I enjoy the heavy and solid quality feel every time I pick it up. Its show-off value is through the roof, whether in a boardroom or at the opera, and once properly 'rooted', it can keep up with most 2015 rivals. Unless you absolutely must have the latest OS and highest benchmark scores, the K900 will serve you well in everything you need to do - and with a killer design to go with it.Read full review
