A great media player ...not yet hackable through the techie nerd forum sites...but might be one day. Saying that though, it's played every file type i've thrown at it including mkv, avi, divx etc etc. If you want a box that will run third party firmware then you need the model before this one (just a wdtv hd media streamer) not the live version. Third party firmware flashed onto it with a usb stick allows extra channels to be viewed and a few extra bells and whisltes...but Boradband where i live is a joke....so i can't stream netflix, youtube or any of the other features installed on this box. It's a great box and a great adition to a home movie setup. I've connected mine to a surround sound system via hdmi and have a Western digital 1tb mypassport usb powered drive attached so have hundreds of films to pick from without leaving my armchair. Would recommend. the only reason i gave it 4 stars was it's not yet hackable (jail-breakable) to give it a bit more capability. It's also nice and small (paperback book sized).Read full review
The WDTV fills a niche that no other mainstream product does. This is the playing and transmitting of MP4 video files to the HDMI input of a TV. So if you want to re encode all of your old DVDs for hard drive storage to play anywhere without wifi or internet connection this does it well. Sure there are other products such as the apple tv which will allow such files to be streamed via wifi to the TV but this will not work unless you have a computer attached with iTunes running . Some TVs will allow the direct connection of a hard drive via USB to play such files but this is not the case with Panasonic or LG which I have tested so far which covers a large section of the market. The box will also stream Netflix and BBC iplayer if you do not have another portal for these services. Then there is the the option to play MP3 audio files through the TV and what ever sound system you have connected to it. Unfortunately WD are now discontinued this product so ebay is the only way to source one of these devices . I tried 3 times to get one which worked ! Third time lucky and now very happy.Read full review

great media streamer. plays everything i throw at it. but beware there is NO wirless. you will need to plug in a ethernet/lan cable to access your home network.very easy to set up. you can also use plex. very handy having the 1tb hdd built in. it does crash sometimes when you plug in several big portable drives. simple to fix-just unplug it. overall happy with this item
This wdtv live media player is by far the best media player available on the market today. If you have a large movie collection on an external hard drive with a USB connection, plug it in to the media player and it will play all widely used video codecs e.g mkv, mp4, avi etc. The wdtv media player also has apps like BBCi player, Facebook, Netflix. You can also stream content from your pc on your home network to it. For such a small box it does alot. The wdtv media players are so good I now own two!

The we live tv in a well built, yet compact solution for all you media playback needs It plays every format I've thrown at it flawlessly in 1080 The internet / network function works really well and it has an auto configure, so plug in the network cable and hey presto, your online. It also take a variety of USB network adaptors if you want wifi. It is a bit slow to boot up if dissconnected from the power along about 2 full minutes, but once booted up ( like a pic) , provided its connected to the power, it then turns on and off in seconds. The only thing missing on these boxes is built in wifi , but network adapters are peanuts to buy now and there are two ports This box is a parents dream for asking on holiday with a hard drive full of kids films to keep them happy I went for an SSD as they are a bit ore robust to cart about on holiday. All in all the best media player you can buy for the price, I have two of these.Read full review
