This is a engaging, moving and insightful film that first came to public attention in 1961 as a play which eventually ended up on Broadway. Fifty eight years later The National Theatre are currently touring with a new production. Written by Shelagh Delaney, it deals with teenage pregnancy, racial prejudice and homophobia yet is in no way a polemic. Filmed in black and white it is a brilliant reflection of the cultural and moral values of its time.
