It is a story worth telling and the acting is great, you do get to know the characters and care about what happens to them, If was obviously made to make a political point and is important for that if nothing else. The extra features are very interesting and much better than usually found. My only criticism is the lack of reality in terms of the numbers and fighting prowess of the German forces. I find it hard to believe they were such poor shots and died so easily. The final battle scenes are marred by this and I think it underplays what must have been an incredibly difficult military situation. The Germans killed something like 5 Allied troops for every German and they were a notoriously effective fighting force and incredibly difficult to dislodge without air support or massive superiority of numbers. I think to underplay this task does the African troops an injustice although I accept the main message of this film is not military but political. Having said all that it is still in my opinion well worth watching and is certainly educational as this part of history seems to have been airbrushed by post-war politicians in France.Read full review
I bought the film because i was told it was a good war film. However i was not told the whole film is in French and subtitled. Great war film but a shame its not in English
A superb film, highlighting the issues these forgotton heroes went through. A touching and thought provoking film. Brilliant fighting scenes. all very realistic.
