This is my first Naim, but not my first integrated amplifier. I'm not sure i'll buy another make again - wow - what a sound! I'm using it with much cheaper speakers (Tannoy Mercury V1), with normal banana plugs and good-quality-but-not-Naim speaker cable and i've never heard anything like it! The bass performance is phenomenal. If your're toying with the idea of trying a Naim, go for it! A used one represents great value, even at these prices. I'm thoroughly enjoying re-discovering some of my old albums with this, love it.

The junior Nait can honestly be summed up in one word: FUN. It isn't the most transparent or detailed amplifier I've heard, but it somehow it doesn't matter; this little 50w black box latches on to rhythms like a bull terrierer with a bone and packs a dynamic punch that shames other manufacturers 'more powerful' offerings, backing up the saying in HiFi circles that Naim watts seem to go further As you move up the range of Naim amplifiers, you gain transparency, refinement and richness, yet strangely they seem to become less "immediate" and peppy. In fact I'd honestly say the 5i is more fun and punchy than a bare (no Hicap) Supernait! Almost as if the bigger amps were designed to sell Naim's separate power supplies... Speaking of extras, here's where Naim's bean counting department have attacked: no upgrades for the 5i. There's no option for adding a Flatcap or pre out for a separate power amp. Sub £400 secondhand prices is cracking value for such an enthusiastic performer. And should you encounter any problems, Naim do have legacy support and wherever possible keep replacement parts for service and repair. For all my glowing praise you should take into account a couple of things before dropping your money on ANY Nait: Firstly, the 5i is critical of sources; crap in crap out. It will not take kindly to your phone and I've personally heard it's distain for an iPod and the TV. Dull, flat and lifeless. A CD5 + Flatcap is a good investment if you still use physical media. Secondly, just be sure you like the Naim house sound which is a little forward. Some might find it a bit shouty and prefer a softer or more laid back presentation. It's not harsh, it's just always engaging and upfront, it doesn't do background music.Read full review
