Unique voice, sounding ethereal in 5.1 surround sound. An other worldly experience.

This is a new CD and sound quality is very good. Nick Drake sadly died young but what a legacy he left with his superb music. This CD is a compilation of favourite and popular songs of his short career. There is not one track that you can fault.Certainly a good purchase for so little cost.
The decision to purchase this disc was largely based on it being available in Hybrid SACD format and while I knew of Nick Drake I wasn't very familiar with his work. I was not disappointed, this is an excellent collection from a sadly missed and well regarded artist. One of Nicks' most known songs 'Bryter Layter' is notably absent from the track selection but that in no way diminishes its' worth. There are an insightful 15 tracks on the disc. Given the selection is largely taken from a total of the 31 possible choices on his original 3 vinyl releases thats' about half his body of work and is a great showcase for his exceptional songwriting ability (meaning lyrically, melodically and structurally)' distinguished guitar style, and sensitive vocals. Nick was managed and produced by Joe Boyd and by that association Nick was supported in the studio by some talented and influential musicians of the day; including at times John Cale and members from Fairport Convention. As an aside I would highly recommend to real music lovers to further explore the body of work produced by Joe Boyd. Nicks' albums did not sell well at the time of release. Nicks' work was regarded as a niche even then being perceived on the fringe of the folk revival of the late 60s and 70s and Nick himself would not participate in any promotional activity. Neither did the label do much to promote him. While Nicks' music did not immediately capture my interest I can say that these tracks have definately grown on me and repeated listening has been immensely rewarding. In the time since his death a succession of well regarded artists have cited the importance of Nicks' influence. The mastering for the SACD edition is faultless and the SACD codec really shines as a medium to sympathetically digitally re-present these period analogue recordings. Reproduction is velvety smooth and sumptuous; digital grain is hard to detect and because of the superb quality of reproduction the ambiance of the studio equipment and techniques of the day are clearly audible. I listen purely in 2 channel stereo so I could not comment on the 5.1 mix Equipment:- Amp; Sugden A21 Class A, Source; Sony S9000DVP (modified), Connect; Siltech Paris, Spkrs; B&W602 (Linn cabling) As a final note the Sony S9000 is highly recommended as a CD source. Available used for pocket money it is an inexpensive way to buy into SACD functionality. In fact the 9000 was Sonys' flagship SACD player for a time. It can be modified by those in the know and once modified this box will shine against players costing £thousands! In the UK Chevron Audio Developments have the expertease to complete the mods. CD is superb, SACD is astonishing, and you can watch DVD too! Sony inhibited CD-R playback but CD-RW play fine.Read full review
